Start locs on short hair
Sponge twists are one of the easiest ways to start locs on short afro or coily hair (about 1 to 3 inches long). The ridged surface grips the curls and twists them into small coils that can then be left to lock.
How to use it
- Start with clean, damp hair and add a little curl cream, gel or loc gel.
- Hold the sponge flat and rub in small circles over one area at a time.
- Work in the same direction across your head for even coils.
- Leave the coils alone to set, and avoid washing for the first couple of weeks if you’re starting locs.
Tips
Use a light product so you don’t get build-up. Rinse the sponge after each use and let it dry fully. For more on starting locs, read how to start dreads.
