Get the right fix if you are suffering from any of these?

When you get your dreadlocks done for the first time, they are tight, clean and fresh. They leave a wow-factor when anyone sees you with your dreadlocks. But after some time, the regrowth will come and your hair will be exposed to the natural elements.

All of these factors will affect the tightness of your hair. And over time, it will make your dreadlocks appear unkept and may come across as untidy.

The good thing is there are simple ways to keep your dreadlocks tight and tidy. We share some insights below.

How can you tighten loose dreads?

You can tighten your loose dreads by using palm or finger rolling dreadlock tightening techniques.

What kind of dreadlock tightening technique should you use?

You can choose to use either of the following dreadlock techniques, depending on how your dreadlocks are.

Palm rolling

Palm rolling involves using the palm of your hand to roll, tighten, and compress the knots in your dreadlocks.

To tighten your dreadlocks using the palm roll technique, simply do the following steps.

  1. Use a clamp to hold your dreadlocks away from the ones that you would like to tighten.
  2. Grab the dreadlock that you would like to tighten.
  3. Place the dreadlock between your two palms.
  4. Roll the dreadlock back and forth vigorously so the dreadlock becomes longer and skinnier.
  5. Do this until the dreadlock becomes tight, but not too tight at the root.

Note – Please be cautious of not rolling the dreadlocks too tightly, as it may damage the dreadlock and the roots of your hair.

Finger rolling

Finger rolling uses a similar technique to palm rolling, except that it requires you to use your index finger and  thumb to roll the dread. This technique is favoured for people that want to have thinner dreadlocks. Or to tighten the roots of the dreadlocks.

Sometimes, the middle finger will need to be used to help with finger rolling.

You can use the following steps to when doing finger rolling.

  1. Use a clamp to hold your dreadlocks away from the ones that you would like to tighten.
  2. Grab the dreadlock that you would like to tighten.
  3. Place the dreadlock between your thumb and index finger.
  4. Roll the dreadlock back and forth vigorously so the dreadlock becomes longer and skinnier. Do this for 30 seconds.
  5. Do this until the dreadlock becomes tight, but not too tight at the root.

Once you have finished doing the rolling, check the dreads with a mirror to see if you are happy with the result.
