Practise before you work on real locs
Learning to crochet, interlock or retwist takes practice. A mannequin head lets you learn sectioning, root maintenance and styling at your own pace, without the pressure of a client or the risk of damaging your own locs.
Who it’s for
- New locticians and students practising for clients
- People learning to maintain their own locs
- Parents learning to do their kids’ locs or braids
- Practising updos and loc styles
What you can practise
- Sectioning and parting
- Starting locs with backcombing, twists or crochet
- Root maintenance with a crochet hook (see crochet hook sizes)
- Updos, buns and loc styles
Tips
Use a clamp or stand so the head stays still while you work. Mannequin hair doesn’t grow back, so plan your practice sections and start in one area at a time. Ready to find a professional? See our loctician finder.

FAQs
Do I need a stand?
A mannequin clamp or stand that holds the head steady on a table makes practice much easier.
